And Smith delivers by coming up with a story in which Ollie’s cloned body must be re-united with his soul. But she is merely introduced here as Mia, and given a solid base to grow into a pupil of the Green Arrow.īut when it comes down to it Quiver isn’t so much a story of heroics as an excuse to bring Oliver Queen back from the dead and de-age him. Smith also introduces the Speedy To Be - Mia Dearden. I got the sense he respects Continuity (with a capital C), he wanted to stay within it, and do no harm to what had gone on before his tenure. Smith also has a great grasp of DC history and gives a fairly organic history of Oliver Queen prior to his death. On balance the good far outweighs the juvenile in his writing. I’ll forgive him as he was 30 years old when he wrote these comics. However, Smith did have a couple of (for me) ventures into the realm of the crass (Ollie goes down on Dinah Lance – fortunately off panel) and he also used an unfortunate turn of phrase involving a “60 year old whore”. His dialog is snappy & fun, and each character has a distinctive voice of their own – there is a fantastic sequence where Boston Brand inhabits the body of Etrigan who is in turn inhabiting the body of Jason Blood, that is quite fun. I found that when Smith stayed within the boundaries of good taste he is quite a good writer. And into this mess enters Kevin Smith to write an old school Oliver Queen Green Arrow comic. So, you get the picture, the “old order” was either gone or seriously damaged goods. He was dead (killed by a bomb explosion) he had cheated on Dinah Lance & had a son from Shado – who had replaced him as the Green Arrow Ollie’s friend Hal Jordan had gone berserk, tried to murder the Green Lantern Corps, died fighting the Sun Eater, and was currently the cosmic entity known as the Spectre even Ollie’s buddy the Flash was dead. It comes at a time when DC had really done a number on poor Oliver Queen. Quiver by writer Kevin Smith and artist Phil Hester collects the first 10 issues of Green Arrow’s new series in 2001. And of course in 20 years some or all of this may have been overridden yet again. Disclaimer: I am almost exclusively a Bronze Age Marvel Guy so I might have some of the DC continuity wrong.
